Sylvie Guyomard

Mosaic artist and scupltor

The common thread of my creations is nature. I have long been fascinated by volcanic eruptions, geology and fossils, anything connected to the bubbling up of the earth. I initially worked with inlaid materials, before arriving at something much more zen today. Without losing that common thread. Sometimes I add inlays in order to emphasise the mystical aspect, rather like icons… But sometimes this is not necessary, only light is. I like it when light slides across the material and only stops on the essential, not becoming cluttered with impromptus. There is a type of inwardness in my work. Things come together in a kind of meditation and the different elements automatically fall into place themselves. The work progresses little by little. I like the idea of the observer becoming active. The fact that you can move around the work and get completely different perspectives from different places. The fact that light from outside is an integral part of the work, enabling it to change as the hours pass and the seasons change. I like the fact that my compositions are sometimes powerful and energetic. And that, at other times, gentleness and serenity are brought about by a certain stripping away. The light is sometimes absorbed or reflected, transporting us into unexpected landscapes.
