Karine Benvenuti

Both a sculptor and a ceramist, Karine Benvenuti explores clay with a disconcerting freedom, constantly on the move. Arranged in twos, her pieces appear to protect and comfort each other, creating a dynamic connection in spite of their differences. They talk and reply to each other in a two-way conversation that gives life to the empty space between them. As if floating on their light feet, they carry a breath, respiration, a “musical interval”. Then the surfaces vibrate under the effect of the light, creating a desire to touch, a gesture or a caress that would resonate with our own skin, so delicate and responsive. For with Karine Benvenuti, the glaze becomes a layer of flesh covering the clay “like skin”. Sometimes soft or wrinkled, pearly or porous, smooth or grainy, elegant or primitive, the “skins” of her ceramics conjure up a tension between gentleness and power, strength and fragility, freshness and maturity. They bear the marks of past experiences, harking back to the snowy landscapes of her youth, and serve as an invitation to journey into the depths of the glaze. – Aurélie Secheret
