Jérome Pereira & Sylvia Eustache Rools : Awaré

Sculptor and plastic artist

Awaré is an encounter between sculptor Jérôme Pereira and visual artist Sylvia Eustache Rools. Jérôme Pereira’s work examines balance and harmony, inspired by the forces of nature, both contradictory and complementary. His works portray the state of grace between tension and fall. Sylvia Eustache Rools trained as a textile artist. Her work displays a clear taste for composition, the manipulation of textures and colours. She explores the psyche and expresses herself through textures. Combining their respective worlds and materials of choice was something they both wanted to do. For him, wood sculpted as he experiments with mass and balance. For her, textures and coloured materials. Here, one digs, removes material and creates a space, while the other, sustained by this harsh reality, endeavours to mark out the void with flat surfaces and lines. Awaré is an ‘us’, the embryo of a possible equilibrium, of a certain complicity. In Japan, Mono no awaré literally means the beauty of the emotional intimacy of things, a form of empathy linked to the sense of their impermanence. To be aware means to be alert, informed, attentive and awake. A participant within the living. States that we seek to inhabit through our art.
